First 18 lines of poem
(section: Zarathustra in the valley)
.

As the morning star arises,
As the lark ascends in azure
And the lips of dawn glow brightly,
With her sharp eyes staring sternly
At the lakeside, down the mountain
There descends, rejuvenated,
Zarathustra toward the lakeside
He ten years ago abandoned.
As he sees the sightless forest,
And he hears the trail bewailing,
No resounding spirit's trodden
Verse's trailway for the ages:
Lines off metre, no more rhyming
In the land of verse forgotten:
Stanzas are no longer striking
But strike out right from the poem,
Strophes are not strict, but declining.
Gloom's glow-glances pierce the pondside.
